UNDERSTANDING HOW PARTS IN A RECIPROCATING PUMP WORK TOGETHER

Let’s walk through how the different parts of a reciprocating pump work together.

The reciprocating cylinder is a hollow tube that houses the plunger as it moves back and forth.

The pump cylinder is a primary part of a reciprocating pump. A cylindrical chamber houses the plunger, which moves back and forth to generate the pumping action. The pump stuffing box is made of high-strength steel or materials that can operate at high pressures and temperatures.

The piston attaches to the connecting rod, which is then attached to the crankshaft.

In a reciprocating pump, the plunger is the main moving component. Visually it looks like a cylinder, it fits inside the pump stuffing box and is attached to the piston rod. As the piston rod moves back and forth, the plunger moves along with it, generating the pumping action. Plunger are constructed from durable materials like high-strength steel.

The connecting rod is a piece that links the piston rod to the crankshaft.

The piston rod is a long, cylindrical piece that connects the plunger to the crankshaft. As the crankshaft rotates, the piston rod moves back and forth, causing the piston to move inside the pump stuffing box.

As the crankshaft rotates, the connecting rod moves the plunger up and down within the stuffing box.

The crankshaft is a central component of a reciprocating pump. It is a long, shaft-like piece that rotates to provide the driving force for the piston rod. The crankshaft is made of high-strength steel and is a part that needs to withstand the extreme forces generated by the pumping process.

Valves are used to control fluid flow into and out of the pump’s stuffing box and are typically located at the inlet and outlet of the pump. The type of valves used in a reciprocating pump can vary, but they are either poppet or rotary valves. Poppet valves are simple, spring-loaded valves that open and close to control fluid flow, while rotary valves use a rotating disk to control fluid flow.

The suction and discharge valves at the top and bottom of the cylinder open and close to allow fluid to enter and exit the cylinder.

A reciprocating pump gasket is a sealing component used to prevent the leakage of fluids.

Deciding between a cartridge seal and a standard OEM component seal comes down to cost and the skills of the seal installer.
