Cartridge seals

An enclosed mechanical seal system with preassembled components is called a cartridge seal. Cartridge seals have a stable and consistent liquid seal between the pump housing and the shaft. Cartridge seals are balance seals most balanced with a double hydraulic method.

With faster pump speeds, heat and friction are created. The standard component seal is not balanced, which increases the wear on the seal faces.

Component seals that have persistent failures can be avoided by using cartridge seals. A cartridge seal will outperform an OEM/component seal alternative because the length of the seal is built into the cartridge with proper alignment of the faces. Although cartridge seals cost more than standard component seals, the simplicity of proper installation offsets the cost of repairs and seal failures that can occur in component seals.

CARTRIDGE SEAL DESIGN

A typical cartridge seal is designed with a gland, sleeve, and hardware, making installation simple. (DIAGRAM OF A CARTRIDGE SEAL?) A cartridge seal secondary parts that are both static and dynamic. O-rings are used to create a leak-proof seal within the pump.

WHY USE A CARTRIDGE SEAL?

Deciding between a cartridge seal and a standard OEM component seal comes down to cost and the skills of the seal installer. Installation is usually not a concern if a trained and knowledgeable technician services a pump with stable operating conditions. However, emergencies can occur and seal replacement under those conditions becomes more challenging and costly.

Cartridge mechanical seals can cost up to three times more than component mechanical seals. Although there is a higher initial cost, over the long term, cartridge seals may be more cost-effective when you factor in pump maintenance and premature wear due to improper installation. In addition, cost savings add up when you factor in lower costs from labor and less downtime when a seal replacement is required.

Cartridge seals are a good choice for operators looking for a long-term, cost-effective solution to pump maintenance. However, if the initial budget is a priority, then component seals and an expert pump installer and operator become the best option.

Advantages of Cartridge
Mechanical Seals

There are several benefits to using cartridge mechanical seals, including:

  • Simple installation with no expert installer need

  •  Long-term cost savings from reduced downtimes during maintenance and repairs

  •  Higher operational stability due to preassembled seal with fixed settings that eliminate the potential for measuring errors

  • No possibility of axial misalignment and subsequent performance issues
  • Potential to reduce the degree of pump disassembly for seal replacement
  • No dirt can enter the pumping process and damage the seal
  • Cartridge seals can be easily repaired
  • No need for custom-made components in a balanced cartridge seal

DETERMINING IF A CARTRIDGE MECHANICAL SEAL IS RIGHT

When selecting a mechanical seal, pump technicians need to consider the installation cost, long-term operating expenses, attributes of the pumping process, and the operating conditions such as heat, friction and pressure. In addition, knowledgeable technical staff is less of a concern for regular maintenance when using cartridge seals, and outsourcing maintenance and repairs are often only needed infrequently.

Lastly, choosing a cartridge mechanical seal will depend on complex factors affecting the pump. One of the primary considerations is which side the seal installs from on the pump. Unfortunately, cartridge seals cannot be installed on the wet side of the seal chamber behind the impeller. For this reason, these seals are incompatible with submersible pumps.
